Everyone has listened, at least once, a hip hop song and, whether it is among your favorite genres or not, you cannot deny that hip hop and rap have a lot of fans. The fact that many hip hop artists are famous worldwide and their songs are in the top charts proves there are many hip hop listeners. Ever since it birth, in the 1970s in New York City, this new kind of music has gained popularity. The roots of underground hip hop go back to the West African music. â€Griots†are African traveling singers and poets, whose style resembles today’s hip hop. The block parties, very common in the New York neighborhood Bronx, helped to the development of rap music. These parties were accompanied by funk and soul music. Then, the DJs realized that they could isolate the percussion break of these songs and this was the beginning of hip hop’s history.
Although confusion between them is often made, hip hop and rap are technically not the same thing. Rap is a component of hip hop music, a vocal style in which the performer makes rhymes to the beats. However, hip hop also includes backing beats being performed by a turntable DJ. Many people don’t know that at the beginning of underground hip hop, the MC didn’t have the leading role. In fact, his job was to introduce the DJ and his music and entertain people between the songs. Of course, the situation has changed a lot since then, as today there are lots of popular MCs and hip hop couldn’t be imagined without the rapping or emceeing part.
Although hip hop and rap was born and developed in the USA, after the 1980s, it began to spread into the whole world. Today, countries like Germany, Turkey, France, and Italy have given internationally known underground hip hop artists. A few examples would be Die Fantastichen Vier (Germany), the Breton band Manau and MC Solaar (France), Cartel (Turkey). However, the United States have kept their monopoly on hip hop music, as the overwhelming majority of the worldwide famous rappers live here: Dr. Dre, Puff Daddy, Eminem, Snoop Dog, Busta Rhymes, The Wu-Tang Clan, Nelly, 50 Cent and the list could go on.
Of course, underground hip hop has changed since the 1970s; styles have been diversified. Rapcore (a fusion between hip hop and heavy metal) is now popular, with famous representatives like Rage Against The Machine, Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit. Another interesting combination is jazz rap, which begun with De La Soul and Gang Starr. Although it hasn’t reached mainstream success, alternative hip hop has given some famous artists such as The Roots and Mos Def. Without any doubt, the most successful form of hip hop and rap has been gangsta rap, â€invented†by Dr. Dre in 1992.This is the style that most of the hip-hopers embrace today.
All in all, whether you love it or despise it, underground hip hop is something you can’t ignore. Millions of people from all over the world listen to hip hop and rap. Some of them are Afro-American males, but that is not a rule. Hip hop is also popular in Scandinavian countries, like Denmark and Swedish and continues to spread into new lands, like Russia, Japan and China. The ghetto music has really conquered the world.
Many people listen to hip hop and rap. It is enough to look at the top charts in USA and Europe †you will find many hip hop melodies. Besides from underground hip hop, other styles have emerged, like rapcore, a fusion between rock and rap, which has also gained many fans.

Hip Hop [Bonus Track] $34.39 If there was a given going into Lone Catalysts' debut for their own label, it was the expert beat-making capabilities of J. Rawls, and he did not disappoint on Hip Hop. Tight, metronomic rhythms and stark, head-nodding beats collide with an undertow of foggy, palliative jazz samples ("The Pro's," "Settle the Score," the speculative indie hit "If Hip Hop Was a Crime," and the cool "Due Process" with Kweli and Rubix), so the music goes down smoothly, but it keeps kicking once it's down. More of an unknown was J. Sands' skills on the microphone, and, if his technique wasn't particularly distinctive, the emcee made up for a vaguely prosaic rhyme style with the poise and self-assurance of his rhymes. His lyrics concentrate almost entirely on the hip-hop lifestyle, so while the dexterity of his words refused to be slept on, their self-referential nature ensured that the album would remain an underground sleeper. As the title indicates, the duo comes from the no frills, straight-to-the-essence old-school of rap, so there is nothing flashy or exceptional about Hip Hop; but it is a rock-solid first effort on which its pair of Lone Catalysts mix an obvious sense of love for the game with a laidback but perceptible prod against the staid predispositions of rap. Stunts, Blunts & Hip-Hop $7.98 Diamond D had quietly provided some exciting production work and made strides within the rap music industry and community throughout the early '90s, but his name didn't become immediately recognizable until his classic guest appearance rapping on A Tribe Called Quest's "Show Business" ("Take it from Diamond/It's like mountain climbing/When it comes to rhyming/You gotta put your time in"), off their masterful second album, The Low End Theory. Even amid vintage verses by such lauded hip-hop company as Tribe's Q-Tip and Phife and Brand Nubian's Lord Jamar and Sadat X, something about Diamond D's forthright and rock-solid, but totally laid-back, style stood out. Hip-hop heads waiting to hear more from him were rewarded with a veritable wealth of treasures when Stunts, Blunts & Hip-Hop, Diamond D's debut album, was released the following year. The album instantly became -- and remains -- something of an underground masterpiece. Stunts is a hugely sprawling, amorphous thing. Nearly 70 minutes would generally seem far too long for a hip-hop album to sustain any degree of good taste, especially one that is mostly song-based and keeps the de rigueur between-song skits to a minimum. There is, in fact, a fair amount of filler here; but even that filler, after several listens, is so ingratiating that the album would seem incomplete without it, and it helps the album to actually be listenable in its entirety, as a single, long, whole statement. Part of the reason even the filler works is because the production -- most of it by Diamond D himself -- is uniformly excellent. The music he comes up with is just as steady as his rhyming. As for his simile-heavy lyrics, they can occasionally seem stilted or awkward, and aren't exactly complex, but Diamond spins a long yarn -- sometimes autobiographical, sometimes fantastical, sometimes a projected scenario -- with the best of them, although he can also delve too often into blanket boasting, and sometimes his words lack any particular direction. It's the everyone-in-the-studio ambience, though, rather than any particular standout aspect, that propels the album. Certain songs do stand out from the overall tapestry of the album: the woeful girl-gone-wrong tale "Sally Got a One Track Mind"; "*!*! What U Heard," with its bouncy bassline; the insistent "Red Light, Green Light"; the Jazzy Jay-produced "I Went for Mine"; the loping "Check One, Two"; the groovy "Freestyle," co-produced by Large Professor; "K.I.S.S.," co-produced by Q-Tip; and the jazz-tinged "Feel the Vibe." But they make far more sense as part of the album's cycle. The Hip-Hop Violinist $11.14 Besides the fact that she's just so gosh darn beautiful, the hip-hop community took to Miri Ben-Ari because of her spirited playing that perfectly fit songs like Twista's "Overnight Celebrity," and in many ways it made them. Right from the title, The Hip-Hop Violinist relies too much on the gimmick of such a thing, and in the end comes off less satisfying than her jazz releases, which had more inspired tiles like Sahara and Temple of Beautiful instead of Female Israeli Jazz Violinist. Half of her guests can't help but dwell on her name, her beauty, and her quirky role in hip-hop, repeatedly giving props to her instead of offering anything substantial. Good news is Lil' Mo will have none of it, instead delivering the uplifting "Hold Your Head Up High" with a passion to which Miri's winding violin responds with spirit. "Chillin' in the Key of E" is intriguing Vivaldi meets Wes Montgomery meets hanging out downtown, and the Southern party anthem "4 Flat Tires" with Baby, Lil Wayne, and Six Shot makes up for a lot of filler. Hearing Doug E. Fresh's human beatbox accompany Ben-Ari's interpretive take on "Star Spangled Banner" is exciting and neither John Legend nor Kanye West damage their lofty status, but insights into Ben-Ari the artist are just too rare. Consider it a mixtape with Ben-Ari appearances and it's more hit than miss, but as thrilling and as fun as the album can be, you can't help but wish the unique voice on her earlier recordings was more center stage. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi Performers: Doug E. Hip Hop Essentials, Vol. 7 $11.18 Stetsasonic's "Talkin' All That Jazz," released in 1988, might be the most exemplary track in the history of hip-hop, even though it's nowhere near as well known as "Rapper's Delight." Its sample sources, including Banbarra's "Shack Up" and Lonnie Liston Smith's "Expansions," are some of the most notorious to date. And though they make very brief and practically buried appearances, the sly percussive flicks from Mtume's "Juicy Fruit" play a very important role -- James Mtume had spoken out against producers who rely on sampling, and his words get filleted by Stetsasonic's vicious rhymes, though he is never addressed by name. "Talkin' All That Jazz" has it all: it's a heated dis track, which argues strongly for the validity of sampling, and it deploys a flurry of craftily used breaks. It's also part of one of the better volumes in Tommy Boy's Hip Hop Essentials series. Though the disc, the seventh of 12, contains several oft-compiled classics (including Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock," Jimmy Spicer's "The Bubble Bunch," and Public Enemy's "Fight the Power"), it also features several classics (Salt-N-Pepa's "My Mic Sounds Nice," Queen Latifah's "Wrath of My Madness," and Crash Crew's "On the Radio") that should be familiar to as many rap fans as possible. Tommy Boy loses points for spelling DJ Quik's name with a "c," but they redeem themselves by closing this volume with Digital Underground's "Doowutchyalike," one of the loopiest songs heard on the radio during 1989 and 1990 (with an absolutely berserk video to match). ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi |
